What’s your truth?

This morning I was up getting the family out the door as the storms in the midwest rage on. The news spoke about bad road conditions,  sink holes with cars falling in and lots of flooding.  On the way to work this morning I got to thinking about the power of rain. As a kid, our basement would flood every spring due to the rainstorms. I loved the rain but I hated all the clean up.  I started to think about my parents, as my father worked on getting the water out and my mother poured the bleach on the floor to begin the cleaning process.  My siblings and I would complain about the work.  I remembered what my mother said that made me love the rain. ” Rain does three important things, it washes away all that is not needed, it brings new treasures to the earth and it lets you see things clearly.”  “We tend to see the destruction that a storms brings, but I think we need to see it as a way to tear down the things we don’t really need.  To get rid of it so we can find the beauty in this world, the truth.” During those flood cleaning sessions she would always find something cool in the aftermath.

As I sipped my coffee and ponder these thoughts, I happen upon  a Dove youtube video about beauty. What struck me about the video was how our perception of ourselves is so different than the way the world sees us.  We focus on the wear and tear of our lives “the floods”. Yet, if we can see that the rain storms in our own lives  as a  way for us to tear down some of the layers we hide in and find our own truth; we would not see challenges as a bad thing but as a way to find the beauty within.

The thought for today is:    Your storms are what washes away all things you do not need, brings new treasures to your life and it lets you see things clearly.  Don’t be scared of the rain. Dance in it!  As you face today’s challenges, ask yourself, how can I use today’s flood to find my truth?
